Who am I?
I’m Carey! I live somewhere in West Georgia, a stone’s throw from Atlanta, with my wife and our two little monsters. I have been drawing monsters (and other stuff) for as long as I can remember. I was dragged into the thankless field of Graphic Design back in 2007. It pays the bills, but my heart, my brain and my right hand are pretty stuck on Illustration! Why monsters? Well, why the hell not?! So let’s take a trip back to the mid-late 1970’s. I learned my ABCs and 123s primarily from monsters—Grover, Cookie, Herry, Oscar, the Count—so I’ve been rolling deep in monsters pretty much my entire life. The more people I know, the more I believe that there’s a little monster in everybody. Most of us reject this part of our nature, but there are a few of us who embrace it. I will not comment on the former, but I have decided to label the latter Monsterkin, meaning “little monster.” If you are reading this, you are very likely a Monsterkin. So, what is the Monster Underground? In the shadows, just beyond the corners of our vision, there exists a secret society of Monsters that keeps our world running relatively smoothly. They possess ancient knowledge that long ago passed beyond the reach of Human memory. Monsters are forces of nature, some of whom are endowed with abilities that surpass Human understanding. You know—magic. Some are put in place to protect Humanity, while others seek to destroy it. Humans are forbidden from interacting with Monsters, but Monsterkin have historically enjoyed leniency regarding this rule. That’s a good thing, right? Not necessarily. There are two main factions of Monsters you should know about: Brownies and Bogeys. Brownies are mostly benevolent souls who exist in symbiosis with humanity. Brownies consider Monsterkin friends. Bogeys, on the other hand, are often malicious. Bogeys consider Monsterkin enemies. The one trait that practically all monsters share is a full and abiding love of the natural world. This is the root of the Brownie/Bogey paradox. Brownies believe that Humans are just as much a part of the natural order as Monsters, and therefore deserve protection. Bogeys usually hold to the belief that the world belongs to Monsters, and that humans are pests that need to be eradicated. Sounds like there’s a story here somewhere. You got that right! As I build this new mythology, I uncover bits of history that will be recorded and eventually made public. I’ll keep you posted. |
